Comparing Silicone Gel
and Saline Breast Implants
The choice between a silicone-gel or saline-filled breast implant is an important decision to make with your surgeon.
There are a number of factors to consider when making this choice.
Both types of implants have an elastic silicone rubber shell. Silicone gel implants contain a cohesive silicone gel whereas saline implants are filled with saltwater (sterile saline). Saline implants may be filled with saline after placement during surgery. By contrast, silicone gel implants remain filled before placement.
Aesthetics (Appearance and Feel)
Natrelle® silicone gel implants tend to more closely resemble breast tissue compared to saline implants, but your surgeon can help you decide what option would be best for your goals. Textured and smooth shells are available on both types of implants. Volume and profile are other aesthetic factors to consider. Profile describes the projection of your breasts after surgery. Available Natrelle® profiles include Moderate, Moderate-Plus, High, and Extra-High. Only Natrelle® offers an extra-high projection option in the United States.
Both Natrelle® silicone-gel breast implants and saline implants have been approved by the FDA. Approved for use in the United States by the FDA in 2006, the Natrelle® silicone-gel implants, specifically, are one of the most thoroughly researched medical devices that have been approved by the FDA. They have been used in more than sixty countries for over twenty-five years. Significant research has gone into developing Natrelle® silicone-gel implants. Natrelle® implants maintain a thick yet supple shell with an added layer to serve as a barrier. Additionally, the implants have a more cohesive silicone gel than was previously used in this type of implant. Numerous studies have demonstrated the safety of Natrelle® silicone-gel breast implants over time. In a study of implants used in both Europe and the United States, after eleven years, 92% of implants in the study remained intact. Allergan seeks to improve the quality and safety of its implants through on-going research and stands behind the Natrelle® line with the industry-leading warranty.
Finding the Right Surgeon
In addition to choosing the shape, size, volume, and texture of your implants, you will need to be comfortable with the surgeon you select. Verifying board certification and asking to see breast implant before and after images can help in determining a surgeon’s quality. Other things to consider include the physician’s hospital privileges, the number of breast implant surgeries the surgeon has performed, the cost of the procedure, and the opinions of the surgeon’s previous patients.
